Breaking News: The Dalai Lama Not Christian (Nor Are Progressives)

I’m seeing a lot of my liberal friends linking an Occupy Democrats post (No I won’t link to it. I read it so you don’t have to.)

The Headline is: Dalai Lama: Quit Praying For Paris, Humans Created Terrorism And Humans Must End It.

The money quote from the Lama himself:

“We cannot solve this problem only through prayers. I am a Buddhist and I believe in praying. But humans have created this problem, and now we are asking God to solve it. It is illogical. God would say, solve it yourself because you created it in the first place. We need a systematic approach to foster humanistic values, of oneness and harmony. If we start doing it now, there is hope that this century will be different from the previous one. It is in everybody’s interest. So let us work for peace within our families and society, and not expect help from God, Buddha or the governments. Furthermore, the problems that we are facing today are the result of superficial differences over religious faiths and nationalities. We are one people.”

Ok. Setting aside the obvious straw man here (“only prayers?” Nah, bombs are necessary too) this quote may work fine for Buddhists, but if you’re a Christian it probably doesn’t make a lick of sense. (I can’t speak for the Jewish tradition, one of the other Cobloggers here might.) I’ll engage in the basic, lay language theology explanation until Bannion comes in and slaps me around about how wrong I am.

Terrorism is an action of humans, but a creation of evil. Now going back, evil is traced to the fall of Adam and Eve, so stretching you might be able to say it something “humans have created” but that’s a real stretch. And honestly, it’s beyond the point. We cannot escape evil without the help of God. Period. That’s the whole freaking point of divine mercy. Yes, we need to act, but we also must pray. These are not (as the Lama implies) mutually exclusive actions. One necessarily depends on the other. At least to Christians, obviously a Buddhist, with their focus on the material world comes to a different conclusion, the one the Lama states.

The progressives, in their never ending quest for a heaven on earth built only without divine mercy or any divinity for that matter latch on to this like flies to honey. Tower of Babble much? (Of course if you ask them “what have you done to stop terrorism today” they’ll stutter at you.) Fundamentally their belief system is at odds which Christian thought. If only someone had written a book about that. (I really should get an amazon affiliate link.)
